Why High Achievers Are Suddenly “Too Good to Get Hired”

If you’re a high-income earner worried about the job market right now, you’re not alone. Over the past couple of years, I’ve seen a growing trend that’s catching a lot of talented professionals completely off guard.

People who have done everything right earned the degrees, built experience, climbed the ladder, and proven their value are suddenly struggling to land new opportunities.

And in many cases, they’re hearing the same frustrating phrase: “You’re overqualified.”

In this episode of the Money Ripples Podcast, I sat down with Isaiah Hankel, founder and CEO of Overqualified and author of the new book Too Good to Get Hired. Isaiah has spent over 15 years helping professionals navigate hiring bias and reposition themselves so their experience becomes an advantage rather than a liability.

What he shared during our conversation opened my eyes to just how dramatically the job market has changed.

Let’s talk about what’s really happening.

The Job Market Has Quietly Changed

For decades, the formula for career success seemed pretty straightforward.

Work hard.

Get credentials.

Gain experience.

Climb the ladder.

But today, those same things can sometimes work against you.

One of the biggest reasons? The hiring process itself has changed dramatically.

Companies today increasingly rely on AI hiring systems, predictive analytics, and automated screening tools to filter job candidates before a human ever sees an application.

That means many hiring decisions are no longer made purely by people they’re influenced by algorithms.

And those algorithms often prioritize retention risk over talent.

In other words, companies want to hire people who they believe will stay the longest, not necessarily the ones who are the most capable.

Why Being Highly Qualified Can Hurt You

According to Isaiah, the biggest fear employers have today is turnover.

Training employees is expensive.

Replacing employees is expensive.

So hiring systems are designed to filter out candidates who might look like they could leave for something better.

And who fits that description? High achievers.

If you have:

  • Extensive experience
  • Advanced degrees
  • Leadership background
  • High earning potential

You may unintentionally signal that you’re a “flight risk.”

That means the system may screen you out before you even get a chance to explain your value.

It’s frustrating, but it’s happening more than most people realize.

AI Is Reshaping Hiring Decisions

Another surprising development Isaiah shared is the growing influence of reputation scoring systems in hiring.

Some platforms now assign candidates a score based on previous applications and hiring outcomes.

If you’re rejected multiple times, that information can potentially affect how other companies evaluate you.

That means applying for job after job with the same approach can actually make things worse over time.

This is one of the reasons why strategy and positioning matter more than ever.

The Most Important Skill Left: Persuasion

As AI replaces more routine tasks, Isaiah believes one human skill is becoming more valuable than ever: Persuasion.

The ability to communicate your value in a way that resonates with the person making the decision.

That means shifting how you talk about your experience.

Instead of focusing entirely on your past accomplishments, focus more on how you can support the organization’s future.

Employers want to hear things like:

  • “I’m excited to contribute to your mission.”
  • “I see myself growing here long-term.”
  • “I’m ready to support your team and help build what you’re creating.”

These signals reduce perceived risk and increase your attractiveness as a candidate.

The Language on Your Resume Matters More Than Ever

Another fascinating insight from Isaiah is how hiring systems are analyzing language patterns.

Many AI screening tools evaluate candidates using the Big Five personality traits model, which looks at things like agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness.

One of the most important traits companies look for today is agreeableness.

That doesn’t mean being weak it means showing that you’re cooperative, supportive, and easy to work with.

Simple shifts in language can help.

For example:

Instead of saying: “I have 20 years of experience leading teams.”

You might say: “I’m eager to contribute my experience to support team success and help drive future growth.”

The message is similar, but the tone changes how you’re perceived.

If You Lose Your Job, Speed Matters

Another important point Isaiah made during our conversation is something many professionals underestimate.

If you lose your job, time matters.

The longer someone is out of the workforce, the harder it becomes to reenter.

Many people receive severance packages and think they can take several months off before searching.

But the data suggests the opposite.

Starting the search quickly gives you more leverage and helps prevent long employment gaps that can raise concerns for employers.

Why This Conversation Matters

At Money Ripples, we talk a lot about financial independence and creating passive income.

But your career is still one of the biggest financial engines in your life. If the job market changes and it clearly has then your strategy has to change with it.

The goal isn’t to hide your experience.

The goal is to communicate it in a way that employers understand and value.

Remember Your Value

One thing Isaiah said at the end of our conversation really stood out to me.

Many professionals begin to question their value when they struggle in the job market. But often the issue isn’t their ability it’s their approach.

Sometimes the most capable people simply need to adjust how they present themselves.

You may still be doing everything right.

You may just need to communicate it differently.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a high achiever navigating today’s job market, don’t assume the system works the same way it did five or ten years ago.

The rules have changed.

Understanding those new rules and adapting your strategy can make all the difference.

And like I always say on this show, knowledge alone isn’t what creates change.

Action does.

So take what you learned here today and start applying it.

Because when you do, you put yourself in the best possible position to create the freedom and opportunity you deserve.
